I have a soft spot for Black pro athletes and their inability to manage money Yes, they're public figures. Yes, jocks are dumb as a box of ass hair. There is no excuse for the media—or you—to celebrate their downfall.
I’m not sure what it is but I have a soft spot for (particularly) african-american athletes and their inability to manage money well. Maybe it’s because I was surrounded by them in college and I understand them differently than others (i.e. how they grew up and what they came from). Maybe it’s because it pains me to see people mismanage money in general, and it hurts even more when the media makes a schadenfreude-laden spectacle out of high-profile cases. Or maybe it’s because I just don’t like to see people get ridiculed in the public spotlight. Let’s face it, outside of their individual fandoms, most Americans aren’t exactly cheering for…

It Happened To Me: I keep having dreams where I call Obama the N-word and I want it to stop Every time it happens my work suffers the next day.
Politically, I’ve been a Democrat my entire life and an Obama supporter for as long as I can remember. I volunteered for John Kerry’s presidential campaign back in 2004 which is where Obama first registered on my map. I watched his speech at the DNC and was instantly enamored. And when he announced his candidacy for president in 2007, I immediately threw my weight behind him. I knocked on doors, educated people about his policies and did the best I could to get people to vote for him. When he was elected, I was ecstatic. In the past, when I had supported candidates, it was out of cold reason; because…

Hugh Grant: The leading man who keeps acting up “Fuck off!” Grant said and walked away.
Hugh Grant has been enjoying, by his recent standards, something of a renaissance. The British actor’s latest film Florence Foster Jenkins, in which he plays an actor married to the eponymous New York heiress and notoriously terrible opera singer (played by Meryl Streep), opened in limited release with Grant receiving rare critical plaudits. Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal wrote that the movie marked Grant’s “most spirited, stylish performance” for 14 years. The New Yorker critic Anthony Lane declared “just when admirers of Hugh Grant were asking if the poor guy would ever get a role of any ripeness, he plucks a peach.” Florence Foster Jenkins is a modest hit too.…

Food fad fetishists have truly lost the plot The art of eating is being lost thanks to a growing army of health nuts and food police.
If we are what we eat, great swathes of the population are fast becoming a herd of crashing bores. Dining has, in recent years, changed course. Eating together was once a uniting social occasion. It now takes the form of cosmopolitan congregations of what would once have been considered eating disorders. I was recently invited to a “Vegan Feast” – a blinding oxymoron if ever there was one. Yet such events are increasingly commonplace. Friends gather, hungry, and nibble at an array of superfoods, antioxidants and obscure grains that promise to hold the secret to eternal youth – now described as “wellness” or “clean living.” More ingredients are verboten than…

After 50 years of communism, Cuba finally gets the Kardashians The Kardashians are among America's first ambassadors to Cuba after thawed relations.
American relations with Cuba are only recently thawed, but our latest ambassadors to the Castro-run island nation might cause Cuba to rethink their new alliance. Thanks to the State Department, the Kardashians—Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kanye and their offspring—are among Cuba’s first vacationers. Hasn’t that country endured enough? The reality television family took a tour of Havana on their first official day, visited the Museum of Rum, and dined at a state-approved restaurant. Although the family is notoriously fashion crazy, they did not ditch Havana’s main drags—which lack in good shopping thanks to the ongoing trade embargo—for Chanel’s Cruise 2017 fashion show, also on the island. The family, who being Armenian should be familiar with the…

The rise of the brocialite Honies with money — and the boys who love them.
Johannes Huebl, the German New York-based model who is married to reality TV socialite Olivia Palermo, likes to go to parties. It would seem he would show up to the opening of an envelope, albeit a gold-embossed envelope. In the past six months, Huebl’s hectic social schedule has included going to several parties during New York Fashion Week, a bash thrown by the NFL, a Tommy Hilfiger-hosted dinner in London and movie premieres for films ranging from quirky Brit comedy “Eddie the Eagle” to veteran auteur Terrence Malick’s “Knight of the Cups”. Whether attending social events with Palermo or a circle of male friends that includes actor Chace Crawford and…

Chris Brown is an ass—but hating him is actually kinda racist Plenty of white entertainers have done what Chris Brown did, but only he doesn't get a pass.
So, Rhianna is cuddling up with Chris Brown again. You know, they guy who did THIS: Personally, I would like to meet the ugly little fucker in a dark alley and choke him til he’s dead, but that’s just me. Luckily – DRAKE! He bottled the fuckhead in a bar and ha ha! Payback’s a bitch, eh? But here’s the thing: Chris Brown is not the first (or last) man to ever settle his differences with a woman with his fists. He has come in for an astonishing level of vitriol and hatred that is astonishing only because he’s NOT getting a pass on something plenty of white entertainers have…

It Happened To Me: I’m obsessed with my husband’s obsessed ex I imagined myself through Sam’s eyes—she could only glean what I was like through press photos. 2D me is so much cooler than the real me.
The year 2007 started off with me deciding to go on Zoloft. I ended a four-year relationship with a guy who might as well have been my brother, I fired my agents (I’m an actor), and I stopped leaving my apartment. My new Tempur-Pedic bed didn’t help this situation. Around July, my sister started to worry. She begged me to consider dating again. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to date, it was more that I didn’t want to get serious. Had it not been for the promise of really expensive sushi with no strings attached, Jason and I may have never met. Like me, Jason, too, was a fan…
